EAR THYME Sat. 12/27/10: Marty Williams visits to discuss recent endeavors.
He had found a cadence, a voice to call listeners to the music and I like others was invited to step along with him, to enter the tide of air across the airwaves, the phone line, the moment of his onstage introduction and then listen and sing and play as the music we made floated out to the world buoyed by Doug’s support. He was ready to serve in the army of The Music, to push off the boat from the shore, sound a 21-gun salute and then stand there laughing as we sped out. And he always made the phone call to welcome us home, to find out more about the trip of the tones, the jones to scat the next passage, the new poem.

STANFORD JAZZ FESTIVAL 2010
Dr. Lonnie Smith, Organist
Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs to present Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Lonnie Smith from San Francisco Bay Area Jazz Organization at Stanford Jazz Festival – Saturday, July 3, 2010 8pm
Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio
Dr. Lonnie Smith, organ; Jonathan Kreisberg, guitar; Ben Perowsky, drums
Saturday, July 3 | 8 pm | Dinkelspiel Auditorium Tickets: $28 general | $16 students | TAKE 5!
You might never have seen organist Dr. Lonnie Smith perform live – you might not even have heard his name – but chances are you’ve heard his music. Hip-hop artists from Run DMC to theWu-Tang Clan have incorporated snippets of his classic recordings into their tracks, making him one of the most sampled jazz artists ever. It’s easy to see why Dr. Smith’s music speaks just as powerfully to a new generation as it did in the ’60s and ’70s: the sound of his Hammond B3 organ is the epitome of grooving soul, an incredibly powerful and versatile instrument.
Dr. Smith commands its full sonic range in every performance, whether supporting a soloist with quietly purring chords, pounding out a funky vamp, or pulling out all the stops (literally) to make the instrument roar. In the words of JazzTimes, Dr. Smith can “light up a room with visceral intensity or lay down some of the nastiest funk ever played on an organ” and “one of the most influential organists to ever man the helm of a Hammond B3.”
Rise Up CD: Dr. Lonnie Smith
CD Cover Notes by Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs
Now I was the first one to say…I really don’t listen to Internet Radio stations…I also did not believe I would ever see a Black President…Be Face-booking or even Twittering but this weekend…a very dear friend of mine called and asked me to check out…www.krmlradio.com…in doing so, I was reminded how much music has been a part of my life and the blessings that have been bestowed on me from the era through which I came…
So bear with me while I trip down my personal memory lane…You see I go back as far as the “icebox”…coming from Harlem, leaning out the window, yelling at the top of my lungs…as a child…”We need a 35 cent piece of ice!” Some of you will remember and others won’t have a clue!
So you will have to indulge with some of the experiences that this station, on the internet, with
DJ/PD Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs and the BAJABA showcase in bringing back my memory bank to full point…It started with me tuning in a little late…that won’t happen again…and hearing “Body & Soul” followed by “My foolish Heart” – Millicent Wood (vocal) and “My Foolish Heart” Bobby Hutchinson/Joey DeFrancesco (instrumental)…Most amazing was I remembered the words so the mix of the two versions sent me to a level where I thought I could sing…Glad I was by myself!
I have known Afrikahn for so long that I can’t really remember…He has a show on KKUP-FM in San Jose (San Jose State University) and now this…It can’t get no better than that!!! Having not met him personally, I always could tell he had a smile on his face…knowledge in his head and music in his heart…
Love me up some Afrikahn…A MUST CHECK OUT !!!!

Dr. Lonnie Smith, Organist
Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs to present Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Lonnie Smith from San Francisco Bay Area Jazz Organization at Stanford Jazz Festival – Saturday, July 3, 2010 8pm
Rise Up CD: Dr. Lonnie Smith
CD Cover Notes by Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs
Dr. Smith’s recent album Rise Up shows the iconic organ master at the top of his form. Along with an all-star band including Stanford Jazz veterans Peter Bernstein and Donald Harrison, he tears into a set of originals, jazz classics, and surprising covers. From sanctified blues to outrageously funky grooves, Dr. Lonnie Smith’s inimitable soul-jazz sounds are as potent as ever, and his Stanford performance is not to be missed!
